Advanced Programming Libraries

The standard libraries every coding round leans on: Java Collections, Streams and the C++ STL.

About Advanced Programming Libraries

A standard library is the ready-made toolkit that ships with a language. In Java that is the Collections Framework (List, Set, Map, Queue) and the Streams API; in C++ it is the Standard Template Library (STL) with vector, map, set and the algorithms that work on them.

Knowing these well means you spend interview time on the idea, not on rewriting a hash map or a sort.

Why it matters for placements

Almost every coding round answer uses a HashMap, a priority queue or a sort with a custom comparator. Interviewers also ask how HashMap works inside and when to choose one collection over another.

What you'll learn

5 topics · 24 lessons, each with practice

  • Pick the right collection for a problem and state its time complexity
  • Explain how HashMap handles hashing and collisions
  • Sort with Comparable and Comparator, and use PriorityQueue as a heap
  • Write clean data transformations with Java Streams
  • Use the C++ STL containers and algorithms in competitive-style rounds

Java Collections

Not started

Almost every coding problem needs somewhere to keep data: a list of marks, a set of seen values, a count per word. Java Collections give you tested, fast containers so you do not write your own. Picking the right one is often half of the solution in an online assessment.

Collections Internals

Not started

Using a collection is easy; explaining what happens inside it is what interviewers test. Knowing how HashMap buckets work or why an iterator throws an exception helps you pick the right structure and debug strange bugs.

Streams & Lambdas

Not started

Modern Java code filters, transforms and groups data with streams and lambdas instead of long loops. Interviewers expect you to read and write this style, and many companies ask stream-based "predict the output" or group-by questions.

C++ STL

Not started

If you code in C++ for competitive programming or online assessments, the STL is your toolkit. It gives ready containers and algorithms like sort and lower_bound, so you spend time on the idea rather than on rewriting basics.

Concurrency Utilities

Not started

Real backends do many things at once, and raw threads with synchronized quickly become slow and buggy. The java.util.concurrent package gives safe, tested tools like thread pools, concurrent maps and futures that interviewers for backend roles expect you to know.
