Both are lists, so beginners often pick one at random. ArrayList is fast for reading by index and adding at the end, which covers most real code. LinkedList only wins when you keep adding or removing at the ends, and even then ArrayDeque is usually better. Expect this comparison in interviews, along with the reason why get(i) on a LinkedList is slow.
