Shell
Work fast in the terminal and automate the boring parts with Bash.
About Shell
The shell is the program that reads the commands you type and runs them. Bash is the most common one on Linux. With pipes, redirection and tools like grep, sed and awk, a single line can do work that would take a page of code.
Shell scripts save those commands into files so routine tasks run automatically.
Why it matters for placements
DevOps and SRE interviews often include a scripting task, such as parsing a log or automating a backup. Fluency in the shell also makes you faster in every other role.
What you'll learn
4 topics · 15 lessons, each with practice

Shell Basics
Not startedOn a server you only get a terminal, so moving around, wiring commands together and setting config all happen in the shell. These basics make every other DevOps tool, from Docker to CI pipelines, easier to use and debug.
Text Processing
Not startedLogs, CSVs and command output are all plain text, and the fastest way to answer questions about them is right in the terminal. These small tools let you search, edit and summarise text without writing a program, and they appear in almost every DevOps interview.

Bash Scripting
Not startedOnce you have typed the same commands three times, it is time to save them as a script. Bash scripting turns one-off commands into repeatable deploys, checks and backups, and it is what most CI steps and server setup scripts are written in.

Automation
Not startedScripts that run unattended in cron or CI must fail loudly, clean up and run on time. This topic covers making scripts safe, scheduling them and the short scripting tasks that DevOps interviews end with.
