When an app misbehaves, the answer is usually somewhere in thousands of log lines. grep prints only the lines that match a pattern, so you find the errors in seconds. Reach for it to search logs, find a setting across config files or test for a match inside a script with -q. When you need a specific column or a total rather than whole lines, pass its output to awk or cut.
