Changing one value in a config file by hand is slow, and impossible across fifty servers. sed edits text as it streams past, most often replacing one string with another. Use it to update a port or hostname in a file from a script, or with -i to edit the file in place. For column maths or reports, awk is the better tool, and for big structured changes use a real config tool.
