Java cannot sort your Student objects until you tell it what "smaller" means. Comparable puts one natural order inside the class, such as sorting by roll number. Comparator keeps the rule outside, so you can sort the same list by marks today and by name tomorrow. Interviewers often ask for the difference, and custom comparators are needed for most sorting and heap questions.
