A normal HashMap used by several threads can lose updates or even corrupt itself. ConcurrentHashMap lets many threads read and write safely without locking the whole map, unlike Hashtable. Use it for shared caches or counters across threads, with atomic methods like merge or compute. A check-then-put written as two separate calls is still a race, which interviewers love to point out.
