A raw partition is just blocks; a file system like ext4 or XFS turns it into files, directories and permissions. Knowing about inodes explains odd failures, such as "no space left" while df -h shows free space, or a deleted log that still holds its space. Reach for this when disk numbers do not add up. For choosing between ext4 and XFS, the distribution default is usually fine.
