A new disk attached to a VM is invisible to your apps until it is formatted and mounted on a directory. Mounting is how a device becomes part of the single Linux tree. You will do this when you add a data volume for a database, and you check space with df and du when a disk fills up. Use the UUID in /etc/fstab rather than /dev/sdb1, because device names can change between boots.
