Long chains of OR and pairs of >= and <= are tiring to write and easy to get wrong. IN matches a list of values, BETWEEN matches a range, and LIKE matches text patterns such as names starting with "A". Use them when the condition fits one of those shapes. Remember that BETWEEN includes both ends, and that NOT IN behaves badly when the list contains a NULL.
