When a page fault happens and every frame is full, the OS must choose a page to evict. FIFO, LRU and Optimal are the rules you will trace by hand to count faults. Optimal is the theoretical best but needs the future, so LRU is the practical approximation. FIFO can show Belady's anomaly, where more frames give more faults, and interviewers like to ask about it.
