Loading a whole program into RAM before it starts wastes memory and time on pages it may never touch. Demand paging loads a page only when it is first used, raising a page fault for the OS to handle. Use it to explain how a large program starts fast and how many processes fit in memory. A fault costs milliseconds against nanoseconds for memory, so even a small fault rate slows things a lot.
