A backend started by hand in a terminal dies when you log out and does not come back after a reboot. systemd runs it as a service: it starts it at boot, restarts it on crashes and collects its logs. Use a unit file whenever an app has to stay up on a VM, such as a Node API or a worker. Inside containers or Kubernetes the platform restarts things for you, so you rarely write units there.
