Once a host is reachable you still need to know what the service says and whether it is listening at all. curl -v shows each stage of a request from the client side: DNS, connect, TLS and the HTTP response. ss -tlnp on the server shows which ports are listening and on which address. Use curl from outside and ss on the box together, for example when an app only listens on 127.0.0.1.
