Once data is copied across machines, a broken network link forces a hard choice. CAP says that during a partition you must pick consistency, refusing some requests, or availability, answering with possibly stale data. Use it to justify design choices, like CP for payments and AP for likes or feeds. Do not confuse the C in CAP with the C in ACID: one means reading the latest write, the other means obeying integrity rules.
