Before picking an identifier for a table you need to know every set of columns that could do the job. Super keys are all the unique sets, and candidate keys are the minimal ones, with nothing extra. You reach for these when normalizing a schema or answering "find all candidate keys from these FDs". Do not mix them up with the primary key: that is just the one candidate key the designer finally picks, and counting super keys is a common GATE-style question.
