Every row needs one reliable identifier so updates, deletes and links hit the right record. The primary key is that chosen identifier: unique, never NULL, and only one per table. Use a short value that never changes, which is why an auto-increment id often beats an email that people may change. When you only need to block duplicates on another column, a UNIQUE constraint is the tool, and the primary key vs unique key difference is asked in almost every interview.
