IP addresses tell you the final destination, but on a local link frames are delivered using hardware MAC addresses. ARP finds the MAC address that belongs to an IP on the same network, such as your default gateway. It matters when you debug why a device cannot reach its gateway, or when you explain why the MAC changes at every hop while the IP stays the same. ARP only works within one local network; it is not used to reach remote hosts directly.
