Many questions ask "in how many ways", for example forming a committee, arranging letters of a word or making a PIN. Permutations count arrangements where order matters, and combinations count selections where it does not. Ask yourself whether swapping two chosen items gives a different result: a president and secretary yes, a team of three no. This counting also powers probability, where you divide favourable ways by total ways.
