Rankings with ties are common, like two employees sharing the top salary. RANK() gives tied rows the same rank and then skips numbers, while DENSE_RANK() gives the same rank without gaps. Use DENSE_RANK for "Nth highest salary" questions so ties do not hide a level. The difference between ROW_NUMBER, RANK and DENSE_RANK is a very common interview question.
