When a query is slow, guessing the cause wastes time. EXPLAIN shows the plan the database will use, such as whether it scans the whole table or uses an index. Use it before and after adding an index to check that the change actually helped. A full table scan on a large table is the most common red flag, and spotting it is a frequent interview task.
