At 3 a.m. the person on call may not be the one expert who knows the fix. A runbook is a written, step-by-step guide for a known alert or task, with exact commands and how to check they worked. Write one for every paging alert and link it from the alert itself. Vague steps like "investigate the database" are useless under pressure, and steps that are always the same are better turned into a script.
