Many grid and network problems are really "how many steps until something reaches everything?". Breadth-first search answers this, and starting it from all sources at once gives every cell its distance from the nearest source in one pass. Reach for it when several things spread at the same time, like fire, infection or rotting fruit. Running a separate BFS from each source, or simulating minute by minute, is correct but far too slow on large grids.
