Moving the disk head between cylinders is the slowest part of a disk read, so the order of requests matters. Algorithms like FCFS, SSTF, SCAN and LOOK reorder pending requests to cut total head movement. Use them for the classic "head at 53, find total movement" questions. Read carefully whether the question wants SCAN, which goes to the disk end, or LOOK, which turns at the last request.
