Load balancers differ in how much of the traffic they can read. An L4 balancer sees only IPs and ports, so it is fast and works for any TCP or UDP service like a database. An L7 balancer reads HTTP, so it can send /api and /static to different services. Pick L4 for raw speed or non-HTTP traffic, and L7 when routing depends on path, host or headers.
