Knowing the entities is not enough; you must know how they connect and how many of each side can link. Cardinality and participation capture rules like "one department has many employees" or "every employee must belong to a department". Reach for them whenever you read a short story and have to model it. Check both directions before writing 1:N or M:N, since reading only one side is the usual mistake.
