Full isolation is safe but slow, so databases let you choose how much protection you need. Each isolation level blocks one more of the read anomalies, from Read Uncommitted up to Serializable. Pick a stronger level for something like stock counts or balances, and a weaker one where slightly stale reads are fine. Real databases differ in defaults and details, so interview answers usually follow the SQL standard table.
