Traffic is never flat, and a fixed number of servers is either too few at peak or wasted money at night. An Auto Scaling group adds and removes instances to follow demand and replaces unhealthy ones, which suits a web tier behind a load balancer. It only works if instances are stateless, so keep sessions in a database or cache, not in memory. A favourite interview question asks what the group does when one instance dies.
