Ratios compare quantities of the same kind, such as shares of money, ages or ingredients in a mixture. They let you split an amount fairly or combine two comparisons into one, like A : B and B : C into A : B : C. Reach for them when a question says "divided in the ratio" or gives one quantity as parts of another. Many later topics, including partnership, ages and mixtures, quietly become ratio problems once you set them up.
