Averages summarise marks, salaries, runs and temperatures, and tests twist them by adding, removing or replacing a member. The trick is to turn every average back into a total, because totals can be added and subtracted while averages cannot. Use it when a question says a person joined or left and the average changed by some amount. For two groups of different sizes, use a weighted average rather than averaging the two averages.
